You Review: Operation Ivy - Energy

By Lisa Toy

As a rebellious and angst ridden 10th grader, I discovered Operation Ivy…the band that has inspired me like no other. Never before had I heard such passionate and thought provoking lyrics as can be found in Operation Ivy’s album, Energy. Jesse Michaels’ voice is unexplainable…there is just something about the way he is able to change back and forth between angelic harmonies and raspy snarls. It is captivating, moving and incredible. Tim Armstrong, of Rancid fame, Dave Mello and Matt Freeman round out this groundbreaking, timeless and influential band.

At the core of Energy are punk values and a catchy ska sound. Their music is more than just infectious, though, it actually says something. Social commentary is rampant throughout and there are songs on this album for every possible mood. Energy is a compilation of 27 of Op Ivy’s fastest, hardest hitting and absolute best songs—it is one of the few albums I can listen to all the way through.

We all have that one album that we’d bring with us if we ever found ourselves stranded on a deserted island and for me, Energy is it. Every time I bring this album out from hiding it rocks my world all over again. This album makes me believe that music can change societal attitudes, values and beliefs. It keeps me optimistic in a world deserving of pessimism.

Good pick for an album review. I actually dug this out of my old cd case after reading the review. Really enjoy the raw recording and positive message.
