While many movies claim to be the “Animal House” of our generation, “Superbad” is the one that most fits the bill.
“Superbad” is an idea that sprang from the fantastically demented minds of two 13-year-old guys, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The most disappointing part about the movie is it took until both were 27 years old for it to finally get made.
Rogen and Goldberg are portrayed in the movie by Jonah Hill and Michael Cera respectively. While Hill’s outlandish style and over the top comedy are great for the character of Seth, it’s Cera’s awkward blend of humor that makes you believe that he is an 18-year-old virgin named Evan.
This was particularly believable during a party scene in the movie when Evan’s dream girl, Becca, asks him to go upstairs, possibly to lose said virginity. What ensues is one of the most ridiculously awkward scenes in the movie where at one point Becca discusses getting turned on, to which Evan replies, “They said that would happen in health class.” This is just one of the examples of a slew of quotable one-liners that will stay with me for a long time.
Cera is the perfect Ying to Hill’s Yang in the movie making it a terrific buddy comedy. But the real winner here is Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogell. Mintz-Plasse, appearing in his first movie, steals every scene he is in. Fogell shows every guy that ever felt like a loser in high school the way to succeed. All you need is to get a fake ID portraying you as a 25-year old organ donor from Hawaii with one name…McLovin.
